OCALA, Fla. — Former Madison County resident John M. Friend, 94, died Jan. 3, 2006, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla.  

He was born Jan. 3, 1912, the son of Dexter and Olsa (Compton) Friend. He graduated From Fairmount High School in 1929. He was in the printing trade for 47 years. He retired from Anderson Newspapers Inc., as a printer in 1977 after 35 years of service.

He was a member and former deacon of Central Christian Church, Anderson, and a former member of the Center Chapel Christian Church of Liberty Township, Fairmount. He was a member of the Fairmount Masonic Lodge 635 for more than 60 years and was a past worshipful master in 1973. He also enjoyed flower gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Nora (Harrold) Friend of Ocala, Fla., whom he married Nov. 24, 1932, (Thanksgiving Day), at the home of her mother in Fairmount; two daughters, Sharon (Gino San Filippo) Schrenk of The Villages, Fla., and Judith (Gail) James of San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren, Virginia (Scott) Yaruss of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Andrew (Angelina) James of San Francisco, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Eleanor and Stella.; and several nieces and nephews in the Fairmount area and across the United States.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, with the Rev. Tom Jones officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Fairmount.

Services were held Jan. 14 in Ocala, Fla., with his wife Nora and all family attending.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairmount Masonic Lodge 635 or the Center Christian Church.
