ANDERSON, Ind. —
A promise from Anderson Mayor Kevin S. Smith to rehire firemen who were laid off last year is beginning to be fulfilled, city officials said.
Smith promised to rehire those who were laid off due to falling property taxes and legislative proposals that impacted the city’s budget. He said those firefighters would be brought back in as positions opened due to retirements.
“Our commitment to Anderson is to maintain adequate levels of public safety,” Smith said. “It is our intentions to always honor these commitments by recalling workers placed on temporary furlough when we are able to do so.”
Among them, Caleb Foster will resume fire department duties Thursday, according to the release. Foster was hired in 2009 and assumed duties with Fire Station No. 4 until the end of last year. During his recent leave, he focused on attaining certification as a paramedic at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis where he is currently enrolled in a paramedics program. He is on schedule to graduate March 5.
“I am thankful to be back,” Foster said. “This is good for me and my family.”
The city of Anderson will present a fiscal plan during the regularly scheduled city council meeting Thursday. The plan includes an expansion of the city boundaries to encompass 21 square miles in northeastern and southwestern portions of Union, Richland, Stony Creek and Green and Fall Creek townships.
Anderson Fast Forward would increase the city’s population by almost 3,000, curtailing the risks of the city losing $3.1 million in federal funding, strengthening services by allowing the city to increase public safety in the future by eight employees, and increasing Anderson’s economic development success along Interstate 69, according to the release.
