INGALLS, Ind. — A Fortville man was transported by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after he sustained head injuries in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday morning.
Michael W. Hahn, 22, was ejected from the Toyota Camry he was driving after the car left the roadway on the west side of Indiana 13 just north of Madison County Road 1000 South, struck a concrete culvert, rolled and struck a utility pole, coming to rest on its wheels, Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said.
Hahn was listed in critical condition at Methodist Hospital on Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The car contained three passengers: Sarah R. Aguston, 23, of Anderson; Ciara D. Grater, of Fortville; and Amanda M. Smythe. Richardson said Tuesday night that one passenger was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with unknown injuries. He was not certain which passenger it was. The other two passengers refused treatment, Richardson said. He said Tuesday morning that all the passengers seemed to be conscious at the scene except for Hahn, who was in and out of consciousness.
The accident’s impact broke the utility pole, Richardson said.
A container of alcohol was found at the scene, but Richardson said police did not know Tuesday how it got there. He said Hahn would be tested for alcohol.
Richardson said state highway workers who were on Indiana 13 at the time told officers that the car was “traveling at a very high rate of speed and almost struck a highway worker prior to the accident.”
There was no indication that Hahn had been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, and the car’s passengers all said they had been wearing seat belts, Richardson said.
Seals Ambulance, Ingalls fire and police, Pendleton fire and EMS and Madison County Emergency Management assisted at the scene.
