One dead in Indy home invasion

INDIANAPOLIS — Officials say one person was shot and killed during a home invasion on the city's northwest side early Friday morning according to a report from WISHTV.com.

The incident occurred just before 7 a.m. at a home in the 7800 block of Harcourt Spring Place.

Officials tell 24-Hour News 8 that a couple was in their home drinking coffee and heard a disturbance around 6:30 a.m. The husband went to go see what was going on while his wife called 911.

While the woman was on the phone with 911, she heard a gunshot and a scream. Officials on scene say the husband is now dead.

He has been identified as 67-year-old Thomas Teft. Officials have determined the couple left their back sliding door unlocked and the screen door was cut open.

The burglar took a 2009 black Hyundai Sonata that was parked in the driveway of the home. The vehicle has a license plate of IW813.

Police are now searching for the suspect. IMPD is now searching for a black man in his 20s wearing a black ski mask and a hoodie.

Officials from Washington Township Schools say the district is bringing in extra security at Greenbriar Elementary School, which is located at 82nd and Ditch Road. The district is also redirecting school bus traffic out of the immediate area of the crime scene.

School officials have notified families of students in the area that they will be using alternative bus routes this morning.
