Federal grant worth $3.1 million

GARY, Ind. — The city of Gary has received a $3.1 million federal grant to equip its men and women in blue with up to 120 "flex fuel" and hybrid vehicles.

Gary's board of works voted Wednesday to advertise for vendors for the vehicles.

If qualified bidders can meet the request by the city's police department, the board could open bids by Feb. 17 and the vehicles could be on Gary's roads by this spring.

Flex fuel vehicles are designed to run on more than one kind of fuel, while hybrid vehicles can alternate between internal combustion engines and electric motors.

The bulk of Gary's order will be 86 four-door flex fuel sedans, but the city is also seeking more than 30 flex fuel and hybrid sport utility vehicles and trucks with snow plows.
