Indiana group gets $10.3M medical records grant

INDIANAPOLIS — A new statewide nonprofit organization has received a $10.3 million federal grant to help connect Indiana's independent health information exchanges and assist in the sharing of medical records.

Indiana Health Information Technology Inc. will help the state's five information exchanges communicate so that health care providers and hospitals statewide can access electronic medical records of patients they track.

The five entities currently track more than 12 million patient records.

The initiative is part of a federal effort to eventually create a national network that will allow doctors in one state to view a patient's medical records from another.

Supporters say the system will improve care and cut costs.
