PENDLETON — A Pendleton man who was shot in his home Saturday night was able to call 911 and tell police the name of his alleged shooter, helping them to capture a suspect just minutes after the victim’s death.
Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer said Sunday that Michael Dickey, 33, was shot in his home at 520 Taylor St. in Pendleton and used his cell phone to call 911 at 10:07 p.m. Saturday.
Officer Mike Alford of the Pendleton Police Department said he found Dickey in his dining room leaning against a door frame suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Dickey had been shot twice in the upper torso and once in the head, Alford said.
An autopsy has not yet been conducted to reveal the full extend of Dickey’s injuries.
Farrer said Dickey was transported to the Pendleton Heights High School parking lot by ambulance where he was airlifted to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.
He died at Wishard at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Alford said.
When police first arrived at Dickey’s home, Alford said, he was awake and able to communicate to officers despite multiple gunshot wounds.
“If you asked him a question, he would answer,” Alford said.
“I asked him who shot him and he said Ryan Stamm,” Alford said.
Dickey told police his acquaintance, Ryan L. Stamm, 29, of Anderson, had shot him and fled in a black sport utility vehicle.
Pendleton police enlisted the help of the Anderson Police Department who located Stamm at 12:20 a.m. on the north side of Anderson.
Stamm led police on a nine-mile pursuit along Indiana Avenue and Scatterfield Road on the northeast side of Anderson before his capture at 12:34 a.m. on Clifford Street.
Stamm, who lives in the 100 block of Clifford Street in Anderson, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, a Class A felony, and resisting law enforcement.
Farrer said Dickey was shot with a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun and said police believe the shooting was drug-related.
Alford reported that police found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun in Stamm’s black Jeep when he was apprehended just after midnight Sunday.
Stamm has previously been convicted of theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a handgun without a permit.
Although at least three gunshots were fired in the Dickey home Saturday night, Alford said neighbors had no idea what had occurred. “I talked to neighbors on each side of him and across the street and nobody heard or saw anything.”
With a suspect in custody just two hours after the shooting, Farrer said police performed well Saturday. “It was a great job done by all the officers involved in the incident. It just shows that all the agencies were able to work well together.”
