Middletown trailer explosion injures one

Owner in stable condition Monday

MIDDLETOWN, Ind. — A travel trailer exploded at a Middletown residence Monday morning, and one man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The injured man owned the trailer that was parked on his property in the 500 block of 10th Street and suffered first- and second-degree burns to his arms, hands, head and neck, Middletown Fire Department Assistant Chief Jon Ashton said.

Ashton did not know the man’s identity.

While firefighters had not determined an exact cause of the explosion, Ashton said the injured man told EMTs that he went into the trailer and lit the stove in its kitchenette when the trailer exploded.

“There was pieces (of the trailer) laying in the neighbors’ yards,” Ashton said.

The brand-new trailer was totaled, and the explosion and subsequent fire damaged a pole barn and house on the property. Ashton estimated the damage between $30,000 and 40,000.

The Middletown Fire Department, a volunteer organization, put out the fire shortly after it arrived on the scene.

“It was a fairly quick knockdown,” Ashton said. “We really didn’t need any assistance on this.”

The state fire marshal’s office will continue to investigate the cause of the explosion.
