Couple bequeath gift to 95-year-old Serbian Orthodox church

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — The will of a northwest Indiana couple leaves more than $1 million to their church.

Mile and Ella Kosanovic bequeathed a trust fund worth $1.06 million to St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in Merrillville. A check for that amount was presented Sunday to the Rev. Marko Matic, St. Sava's priest, during a luncheon celebrating the heritage of the 95-year-old parish.

Ella Kosanovic was 91 when she died in March. Mile Kosanovic, 92, died last year. The couple lived in Gary, where the parish was founded.

Congregation president Dennis Svilar says the couple asked that the congregation match the gift with $500,000 in additional donations.
