Production places the state fifth

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Looking for a local twist for your Thanksgiving meal? It should be no problem to get an Indiana turkey.

The Indiana Business Research Center says Indiana raised 14.5 million turkeys valued at $306 million in 2008. That's nearly 520 million pounds of turkey. Indiana ranks fifth in the nation in the value of its turkeys, following Minnesota, North Carolina, Missouri and Arkansas.

The research center says Indiana also produces about 1.7 percent of the nation's processed green beans and about 1.3 percent of its fresh sweet corn.

But it's unlikely that Thanksgiving sides such as potatoes, sweet potatoes and cranberries were produced in Indiana, since a tiny amount of agricultural land is dedicated to those crops relative to other states.
