Indiana soldier 'savoring life' after Fort Hood shooting

Nathan Hewitt of Lafayette begins therapy after being shot in the calf, hip

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An Indiana soldier stationed at Fort Hood says he is savoring life since being wounded in the mass shootings at the Texas base that left 13 dead and wounded 30 others.

Army Cpl. Nathan Hewitt of Lafayette was shot in the calf and hip and has started physical therapy. He returned to work last week as a big engine and truck mechanic.

Hewitt told the Journal & Courier of Lafayette that the Nov. 5 shootings showed him how quickly life can change and that he wants to enjoy his time now.

Hewitt is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in January but isn't sure whether that will happen. He may be needed to testify at the trial of Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, who is charged in the shooting.
