ATTICA — The mayor of the western Indiana city of Attica has died after leading the community for nearly a decade.
Mayor Deon "Butch" Swift II died Thursday in a Lafayette hospital at age 62. Attica Clerk-Treasurer Sharon Negele says Swift was diagnosed about a week earlier with an aggressive prostate cancer that doctors were unable to treat.
Swift was a Republican first elected in 1999 as mayor of the 3,500-person city about 25 miles southwest of Lafayette. He was re-elected in 2003 and 2007.
