ANDERSON, Ind. — The male driver of a car was in critical condition after his car was struck by a freight train Tuesday at Columbus and Ohio avenues near downtown Anderson.
Carl E. Helbert, 54, Anderson, was flown by helicopter from the nearby Mounds Mall parking lot to an Indianapolis hospital.
The accident occurred about 7:40 p.m. and closed crossings between Columbus and Main Street as crews cleared the wreckage from the tracks.
Anderson police said the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Welbert was westbound on Indiana 32, turning south onto Columbus when it was hit by the eastbound train. Police reported that, before the collision, the Grand Prix went left of center, hit a curb and lurched onto the railroad track. The vehicle stalled there, was struck by the train and was pushed about 100 yards east of the intersection.
Police were investigating and unable to say Tuesday night whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
