More than $7,700 raised for Madison Heights monument

Pirates monument will be displayed outside Anderson High School

ANDERSON, Ind. — Donors have given more than $7,700 to create a monument to a former Anderson high school that closed more than a decade ago.

The monument to Madison Heights High School will be placed outside Anderson High School, which once housed the former school. Supporters say they're surprised that people gave nearly $8,000 in just seven weeks of fundraising.

Organizers plan to sell personalized bricks in 2010 to raise more money for the monument. The bricks will pave the area around the monument.

Madison Heights closed in 1997. The Anderson Community Schools board recently voted to close one of its remaining two high schools because of declining enrollment.
