AHS band employee fired on parents’ complaint

Chow: Case referred to child services

ANDERSON — A contract employee who worked with the Anderson High School marching band was fired last week after a parent complained of contact outside of school between her and an underage band member.

Anderson Community Schools Superintendent Felix Chow on Saturday confirmed that the employee had been let go in recent days after the school district was notified.

“She was informed her services were no longer needed,” Chow said.

He said the schools followed district policy by terminating the employee and then referring the case to the Department of Child Services. “We notified the proper authorities.”

Chow said the student and the employee each denied any inappropriate relationship, but he said ACS policy forbids socializing between students and employees outside school.

“It had been going on for a while,” said Chow, who said he did not know the name of the fired employee or the student. He said the employee was in her early 20s and the student was a minor.

“Both parties admit seeing each other on the weekends,” Chow said.

The employee performed no other duties in the local schools outside of her contract duties with the band, Chow said.

Officials from the Department of Child Services could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
