ANDERSON, Ind. —
At its annual Awards Gala this month, the Madison County Chamber of commerce will unveil a new award recognizing an outstanding non-profit business.
The Non-Profit of the Year, developed with guidance from the United Way of Madison County, will be awarded to an organization that makes a “positive community impact, employs accountable business practices, has an engaged board and strong leadership, and values partnership and collaboration,” according to Chamber officials.
The business must also focus on education, income or health outcomes.
The award will be presented at the Chamber’s annual awards gala, Feb. 28 at the Paramount Theater Ballroom. Cocktails will be served, followed by a silent auction, dinner and an awards presentation, including a brand-new award recognizing an outstanding non-profit business.
Some winners have already been named, including Ambassador of the Year Georgeann Whitworth, Chairman’s Award winner Mike Latchaw and Females Active in Business Award winner Janice Stamper. The Keith Pitcher Character in Business Award will go to Flagship CEO Chuck Staley, who said he’s “honored to receive any award with Keith Pitcher’s name attached to it.”
Pitcher, who headed the Chamber of Commerce for 13 years before retiring in 2010, “was a personal friend and mentor,” Staley said.
Winners of other awards, including Non-Profit, Emerging and Small Businesses of the Year, won’t be named until the gala.
Non-Profit of the Year nominees are: the YMCA of Madison County, 28 W. 12th St.; the Children’s Bureau Inc., 1102 W. 14th St., and Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana.
Nominees for Emerging Business of the Year are: Home Instead Senior Care, in the Flagship Enterprise Center; indoor and outdoor decorator Gray’s Design Studio, 1331 Main St., and Coeus Technology, which is in the Flagship business park.
Small Business of the Year nominees are: Lambert’s Music Center, 1325 Meridian St.; lighting producer and designer Majestic Productions, 305 N. Main St., Summitville; and weapons producer Xtreme Alternative Defense Systems, 1735 W. 53rd St.
XADS CEO and founder Pete Bitar said the company was “humbled” to be named a finalist.
“XADS feels very blessed to be a part of Anderson’s renaissance,” he said. “We look forward to answering the door when future opportunity knocks for this great city.”

Yard sale season means big business
