Susan Miller: Local events celebrate what's right in our world

Fall is prime time for more than political ads. It’s also the start of event season for many fundraisers and good causes. If you’d like a break from the endless political rhetoric, you might want to check out some inspiring events taking place here in Central Indiana.

While there are too many worthy events to cover them all, below are a few you may wish to check out:

Local schools face their share of challenges, yet they manage to consistently turn out stellar graduates. The Anderson Education Foundation will celebrate 15 inspiring Anderson Community School alumni on Friday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.

Held in the Anderson High School cafeteria, the Hall of Fame Banquet will honor alumni representing graduating classes from the 1940s through the 1980s.

Who are these achievers? They include accomplished graduates in fields ranging from the federal government to education entrepreneurship and “quiet heroism.”

In addition to enjoying recipients’ remarks, guests will get to dig in to two perennial school cafeteria classics — spaghetti and chicken and noodles.

Tickets are $20, and more information is available from the Anderson Education Foundation at aef@acsc.net. Proceeds help fund classroom grants for Anderson Community Schools.

Another inspiring event will take place on Oct. 23 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The Petticrew Faith-In-Action program, titled “Politics, Religion and the Common Good,” will examine how communities can rise above political tensions and rhetoric to arrive at solutions that benefit democracy and restore civility to politics.

Speakers include Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who will deliver the keynote luncheon remarks and a morning panel presentation led by Parker Palmer, social activist and author of nine books including,  “Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit.”

Most remarkably, the conference will include a panel comprised of Republicans and Democrats who will discuss habits that can help communities transcend partisanship to restore a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

The seminar is presented by Christian Theological Seminary. Tickets are $20 for the morning session, $20 for the luncheon or $40 for both, with students and retirees receiving a 50 percent discount. More information is at www.cts.edu.

Finally, after the elections and before the Christmas party season begins, check out the East Central Indiana Youth for Christ Celebration Banquet on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m. The event will celebrate more than three decades of youth leadership and ministry in East Central Indiana.

The banquet will be held at Madison Park Church of God with the keynote address being delivered by WISH-TV meteorologist Randy Ollis. Elwood Mayor Ron Arnold and film producer Clayton Jennings will also speak. Tickets are $20, and more information is available at eci-yfc.org.

It’s easy to stay home and watch the new fall shows, but remember you’ll have to endure the political ads with their negative attacks.

Celebrate some of the good stuff by checking out area events that celebrate what’s right in the world.

It’s hard to say what’s worse — being hospitalized, or the bill that follows.
But in some places, that bill might be a bigger hit than others: Say, Monterey Park, Calif., for example, where an inpatient being treated for heart failure could expect to pay about twice the average between Madison County’s Community Hospital Anderson and St. Vincent Anderson Regional.

Yard sale season is upon us, again.
In Ginnie Clevenger’s Pendleton neighborhood, it’s been a Pendle Hill homeowners’ association tradition since 1977, marked every year with a big banner and balloons tied to mailboxes. Saturday, between 15 and 20 homeowners had signed up to price-sticker their old clothes, video tapes, whats-a-whose-its and thing-a-ma-bobs, and spread them across their front lawns.
