Zook resigns Muncie parks job

Smith appointee pursuing private sector opportunity in Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. — Doug Zook, director of the Muncie Parks Department, has resigned effective April 2.

Zook served the same position in Anderson under Mayor Kevin Smith’s administration.

Also resigning in Muncie was Wayne Huffman, who worked in the city’s personnel department. Huffman also worked a similar job under the Smith administration.

“The time was right,” said Zook, who has worked for Mayor Sharon McShurley since January 2008 when she took office.

Zook will be returning to work in Anderson but said he can’t say where. When asked if he’d be returning to city government, he said that he took a job in the private sector.

He said it was an economic decision.

“An opportunity came up that pays more money and keeps me in Anderson,” he said. “It’s good for me professionally.”

He liked his experience in Muncie.

“I love my job, and I had a great staff. It just came down to economics.”

He hopes he’s left a positive legacy in Muncie.

“I hope I left the department in better shape than when I took it over.”

Huffman could not be reached for comment.
