In the owner’s words: For years Vikki Carter was a bartender at the Corner Tavern at 29th St. and Pendleton Ave., and she loved it. But as General Motors Corp. moved its operations elsewhere, customers started driving away as well.
When the bar went up for sale in 2002, Carter knew she had to reinvent herself, and hair styling seemed just the thing.
“I’ve always worked with my hands so I needed something where I could be with people and still work with my hands. I had friends who were hairdressers and I thought that would be as close to the tavern business.
Carter went back to school and earned her cosmetology license. For the next several years she worked at a number of area salons, and then decided it was time to open her own salon, The Palms Salon.
The location she chose was The Landings, office complex across from Fraziers Dairy Maid. The best part? Her new salon overlooks a lake.
“We have created a relaxing, tropical atmosphere with about 25 feet windows overlooking the lake,” she said. “Every booth in the salon has a view of the lake so that every client can enjoy the beautiful scenery,” she said.
And of course Ernie. Ernie is a fat white duck someone abandoned at the lake who seems anything but homeless. He shares his home with Mallards and Canada Geese, and has been adopted by Carter and her colleagues.
“During the summer, everything’s green and the water’s blue,” Carter said. “Working on the water is a great thing to me. This is as close to the beach as we can get in Anderson.”
“I love the atmosphere of this salon,” said stylist Pam Bertram. “As soon as people come in, they go Oh My God, I love the view.
She said she also likes the pitch-in atmosphere among the stylists.
“Every week is better and better. We’re all survivors,” Bertram said. “This isn’t something part-time. We’re doing it for a living. We run our personal lives around our work.”
