Area markets not seeing swine flu confusion

Pork sales steady despite swine nickname

By Brandi Watters, Herald Bulletin Staff Writer

ANDERSON —Though swine flu may be causing pork stocks to drop, it seems to be having little effect on area shoppers.

Connie Gardner, of Marsh Supermarket’s corporate office in Indianapolis, said the store has not witnessed a drop in pork sales, and hasn’t encountered customers questioning butchers about the safety of pork.

In Anderson, Strong’s Market is also weathering the swine flu unscathed.

Manager Linda Bush said pork sales are fine, and her customers seem confident that pork is safe.

“We’re OK with everything on our pork.”

Even though eating pork has been deemed safe by World Health Organization officials, a sign was posted at the meat counter at Strong’s Market on Tuesday reassuring customers that the market does not purchase pork from Mexico.
