On the Job
What kind of jobs do people have in Madison County? What do they do on the job? In a series called On the Job, The Herald Bulletin will look at many occupations and the people who work them.
Would you like to have your job profiled? If so, contact Associate Editor Stephen Dick at 640-4863 or steve.dick@heraldbulletrin.com.
ANDERSON — Andersonian Daniel Brown, 28, has a job that keeps him moving — and might keep you moving, too.
He’s a taxicab driver for Anderson Taxi, with an occasional shift as a dispatcher. Brown agreed to talk to The Herald Bulletin for the first installment of our weekly “On the Job” series, which invites local people to tell us about their jobs, in their own words.
Q. How long have you been at your job?
A. About a year and a half.
Q. What do you like best about your job?
A. Meeting different kinds of people. It keeps it interesting.
Q. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened on the job?
A. I can’t really think of anything too funny that stands out.
Q. What’s the most serious thing that’s happened on the job?
A. Pretty much dealing with people in domestic situations. Thankfully, I’ve not been threatened too much.
Q. What’s something that people don’t realize about the job you do?
A. Everybody expects you to be where they’re at in so many minutes. They don’t understand there’s 50,000 people in Anderson. At any given second more than one of them might want a taxi.
Q. What kind of jobs does Madison County need?
A. Industry. More factories, less restaurant and store jobs. We’ve got plenty of those. We pretty much need industry.
Q. What other jobs have you had?
A. This is probably about my 30th job since I was 18. I’ve pretty much done everything you can think of.
Q. If you didn’t have to work for a living, what would you do?
A. I’d like to travel and get to see some of the world.
Q. How do you like to spend your hard-earned money?
A. Bills. Normal things — food, clothes and stuff. I just moved into a new apartment. It’s costing me an arm and a leg to get started.
