ANDERSON, Ind. —
Anderson University senior Chris Jarrett has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball Most Valuable Player for the 2010 season. Don Brandon was named Coach of the Year for the 11th time in his career and six Ravens made the first team.
Jarrett hit .443 (43-for-97) in conference play and had 41 runs, 34 RBI, seven doubles, five triples, and nine home runs. He had a .897 slugging percentage and a .496 on-base percentage during league play. Overall in 2010, Jarrett ranks among the conference leaders in batting average (.441), hits (75), stolen bases (23) and slugging percentage (.882). The senior led the HCAC in runs scored (62), RBI (63), triples (8), home runs (16), total bases (150) and stolen bases (23). His slugging percentage, home runs and total bases were all second most on the single-season school record list.
Jarrett holds five school records and ranks in the top 10 in 22 different categories. He holds the game record for at bats (7), RBI (8) and triples (3); the season mark for sacrifice flies (10); and the career record for triples (31). He is also in the top five on the career list for slugging percent (2nd, .719), runs scored (5th, 178), hits (5th, 223), total bases (2nd, 410) and sacrifice flies (3rd, 13).
Brandon, who finished his legendary career with 1,100 victories, was named Coach of the Year for the first time since 2000 and the 11th overall in his 38 seasons at Anderson. Other years he won the award were in 1976-77, 1980-82, 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1999.
The Raven mentor led the team to its first conference championship since the 2001 season, finishing 26-16 overall and 17-5 in the HCAC. It was the 14th conference championship in Brandon’s tenure.
Seniors Cody Young and Jeremy Hazen were also on the first team. Young led the HCAC in batting average (.482), slugging percent (.982) and on-base percent (.532). He also had 53 hits, 45 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs, 43 RBI and 11 stolen bases this season in just 110 at-bats after missing 15 games with a knee injury. His slugging percentage was a school record.
His 13 home runs were 10th on the school list and he ranks in the top 10 in five career categories at AU. He also holds the school single game record for at-bats (7), runs (6), hits (6) and total bases (14) against Defiance this season.
Hazen finished the season at .415 with 73 hits, 56 runs, 17 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 47 RBI and eight stolen bases. He also set career school records for average (.425) and slugging percentage (.723). He ranks 9th on the season hits list with 73 this year.
Junior Brady Roundtree and sophomores Brett Detty and Greg Vogt were also named to the 1st Team. Roundtree hit .388 with 47 runs, 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 43 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Detty batted 460 with 10 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 29 RBI and Vogt was 7-1 with a 4.98 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 13 appearances on the mound this season.
Senior Aaron Vogel and junior Garrett Stone were named to the 2nd Team. Vogel was 5-0 with a 6.26 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 15 appearances this season while Stone batted .392 with 15 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs and 55 RBI.
Junior Seth Daniels, sophomores Nate Clem and Michael Tucker and freshman Drew Kidd were named Honorable Mention.
Daniels was 3-0 with a 6.85 ERA and three saves in 17 appearances out of the bullpen this season. Tucker hit .350 with 14 doubles, 15 home runs, 51 RBI and Clem batted .365 with 16 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBI. Kidd finished at .375 with three doubles, five triples, two home runs and 27 RBI.
AU also set six school records this season and led the nation in batting average (.392) and slugging percentage (.663). In addition to those school records they also set new marks for slugging percentage (.663), doubles (120), home runs (77), RBI (418) and total bases (1,011).
