Raven Roundup: AU baseball improves to 4-0 in Florida

For The Herald Bulletin

The Anderson University baseball team swept a doubleheader Monday in Winter Haven, Fla., beating Husson University 6-5 (nine innings) and 5-0.

Junior Kyle Dillon started on the hill in the first game for the Ravens. After allowing two first-inning runs, the right-hander retired nine consecutive Eagles. He allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work. He did not, however, receive the decision.

Coming in to pitch the top of the seventh inning was Tyler Watson. The freshman right-hander allowed one run in the seventh as Husson took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, junior Brady Roundtree reached first on a single. John Clawson then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Roundtree into scoring position. Garrett Stone’s RBI single plated Roundtree and sent the game into extra innings.

Watson pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, and the Ravens manufactured the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a David Addington sacrifice fly to score Ricky Peters. Watson recorded his first victory of the season allowing just one run in three innings.

Cody Young, Michael Tucker, Roundtree, Nate Clem and Stone each collected two hits for the Ravens.

Sophomore Nate Wills had a nearly flawless performance on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader. The hard-throwing right-hander had great command over his fastball and sharp breaking pitch. He recorded 10 strikeouts on his way to a complete-game shutout.

The game was scoreless after four innings until the Ravens scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. That was all Wills needed as he got stronger as the game went on, striking out six batters in the final three innings while allowing just five hits and striking out four of the final seven hitters.

Chris Jarrett, Clem and Stone each collected two hits for the Ravens.

The Ravens (4-3) take on Ripon College today in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 pm at the Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, Fla. The game will be carried live on Stretch Internet.
