Scott Underwood: Holiday issue of Madison full of cheer

You'll recognize the current issue of Madison by the close-up picture of Santa

By Scott Underwood, Herald Bulletin Editor

Here at The Herald Bulletin, we often refer to ourselves as “the newspaper.” While that certainly is our identity and publishing the newspaper is the lion’s share of our job, we produce other products, as well.

There’s our Web site, www.theheraldbulletin.com, where visitors can find breaking news, many of the articles that appear in the print edition, plus other material such as videos, reader forums and photo galleries.

We also publish a weekly newspaper called The Pendleton News and a weekly product called Madison County Direct that’s used to deliver classified ads and advertising inserts around the county.

And we publish a glossy quarterly magazine, Madison, that has lots of interesting feature stories about the people, places, history and institutions of Madison County. A fifth issue of the magazine comes out at the holidays.

That’s the issue that’s available for purchase right now at the counter of The Herald Bulletin (visit during business hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday) and at about a dozen retail outlets around Madison County. You can also subscribe to Madison for home delivery at a cost of $15 for the year. Write to Madison, 1133 Jackson St., Anderson, IN 46016, or call 640-4848 to subscribe.

You’ll recognize the current holiday issue by the close-up shot of Santa Claus on the cover. Inside, you’ll find stories about a Winter Princess, a tree farm, the Nile restaurant, holiday recipes and lots of other topics. Each issue of the magazine also has personality profiles, entertainment calendars, and how-to stories to help you through your daily life.

Scott Miley coordinates and edits Madison. As the features editor of The Herald Bulletin and a key contributor to our news product, Scott has a keen eye for interesting stories. He works closely with our staff reporters and a cadre of free-lance writers to assure that Madison offers a provocative mix of content every issue.

The maiden issue of Madison was published in early 2007. The format and frequency of the magazine has changed since then. Every issue has offered interesting stories, and we think the magazine is getting better and better as we learn from our successes and mistakes.

I hope you pick up a copy of Madison and spend an hour or two with it. It will enrich your understanding of Madison County and your appreciation of the interesting people, places and things in Anderson, Elwood, Alexandria, Frankton, Lapel, Pendleton — and everywhere in between.
