Madison County has been hit hard by the global economic crisis. "Coping with Hard Times," produced in conjunction with an advanced news writing class at Anderson University, chronicles how local people and organizations are coping.

SUNDAY

— Poverty often forces neglect of health care.

— Despite crisis, some Rust Belt cities managing to retool.

— Reality of poverty challenges notion that hard work guarantees success.

— Local experts discuss the causes of poverty.

— Salvation Army uses United Way grant to try to break the cycle of poverty.

— Those just above the poverty line have trouble finding help.

MONDAY

— For food pantries, not-for-profits and churches — funding down, needs up.

TUESDAY

— Poverty, education have symbiotic relationship — for good or bad.

    Tangible help for coping with grief during the holiday season is available this weekend from two local churches: First Presbyterian Church and Madison Park Church of God. The churches are offering events that are free and open to the public.

  • Theft from ATM leads to man’s arrest ANDERSON — Anderson police arrested a man Wednesday who charged $1,500 to his ex-girlfriend’s ATM card over the holiday season, according to a police report.

  • Stabbing 16.JPG Anderson man stabbed outside store A 20-year-old Anderson man sustained a life-threatening stab wound Tuesday evening, and was being treated at Saint John’s Medical Center. Authorities expect he will be transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
