ELWOOD, Ind. —
An elderly woman was arrested after threatening officers with a knife Friday afternoon.
Mary Sullivan, 70, of Elwood, refused to leave her home in the 2000 block of L Street after receiving eviction notices from her landlord, according to a press release from Elwood Police Department.
According to police reports, Sullivan allowed Elwood officers Brian Branson and Nick Oldham to come in and speak to her. When they told her she needed to leave, she reportedly bent down and came up with an 8-inch filet knife and started threatening them.
Both officers drew their guns and pleaded with Sullivan to drop the knife, which she eventually did. It was the same knife officers believe Sullivan used to threaten a contractor who had come over earlier in the day to change the locks.
Assistant Police Chief Scott Bertram said the contractor was on the phone with a civil service agent when he went to the home, and when Sullivan threatened him with the knife, he was forced to retreat to his vehicle.
“I am proud of how our officers responded to this dangerous situation,” said Chief Sam Hanna in a press release. “It is a credit to their character and training that they were able to defuse the situation.”
Sullivan faces two counts of attempted battery and one count of intimidation, all Class C felonies, according to the release.
