ANDERSON, Ind. —
A historic West Eighth Street home was damaged by fire Wednesday morning.
Gary Condon, Anderson Fire Department assistant battalion chief, said they received the dispatch at 7:35 a.m. at 231 W. Eighth St. There was smoke coming from the second story and third-floor attic. Fire damage, Condon said, was limited to the attic although there was smoke and water damage throughout the house.
Condon said firefighters were able to quickly knock down the blaze by fighting the fire from inside the home and using the ladder truck.
One of the home’s owners, Nancy Soto, said the house, built in the 1870s and being used as a duplex, was occupied by her and her husband, Fidel Soto, and her brother-in-law Richard Hedrick. All of them were home at the time of the fire along with a dog and bird. Everyone was able to get out safely, she said.
Soto said the house — the one where she and her sister were brought home from the hospital to — has been in the family since 1920.
“We are all OK; no one was hurt, so that is good,” she said, with a forced smile. “It will all be OK.”
