Man charged with arson in killing of cat

ANDERSON, Ind. — A man who neighbors say was playing baseball with a decapitated cat head outside a burning home was being held at the Madison County Jail Tuesday.

Anderson fire chief Phil Rogers said on Monday there were two cats involved; however on Tuesday he said there was only one.

Rogers said fire investigators were told by neighbors near the single-story home in the 600 block of West 34th Street that Daniel Davis, 32, was hitting the cat’s head with a baseball bat.

Davis was arrested by Anderson police after he confessed to cutting the cat’s head off and burying its body in the yard. He was preliminarily charged with arson and killing a domestic animal, and was being held on a $20,000 bond.

According to police spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur, the residence belonged to Davis’ aunt. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire about an hour after arriving at 4 p.m. Monday. No one was injured.

Rogers said an investigation showed the fire, which was contained to the dining room, was started on the back porch with gasoline.
