ANDERSON — A Muncie man was arrested Saturday night after he led police on a high-speed chase of more than eight miles from the city’s west side to beyond Daleville in Delaware County.
James L. Ratliff, of Muncie, was arrested at about 8:20 p.m. Saturday after the 1998 Ford Explorer he had driven at speeds up to 90 mph slowed to a stop east of Delaware County Road 700 West.
Anderson police were dispatched to the 1600 block of West 14th Street at about 8 p.m. Saturday. Dispatchers said a caller reported a woman was in a Ford Explorer with a man who held a gun on her.
When police arrived at the scene, the vehicle fled the scene and headed east on 14th Street, reaching speeds of 65 mph near the intersection with Central Avenue, police said.
The chase proceeded east on Ohio Avenue and Mounds Road. Police said the driver ran through at least one red light and one stop sign before reaching speeds of up to 90 mph on Indiana 67 near Chesterfield.
At least one Anderson police cruiser and a Madison County sheriff’s car pursued the vehicle into Delaware County, according to radio traffic, and other units were called off as units from Daleville and Delaware County joined the chase.
The chase ended when the Explorer slowed to about 20 mph before coming to a complete stop. Police said Ratliff was alone in the vehicle.
Along with the arrest of Ratliff, police said they recovered a handgun from the vehicle.
Police last night were talking to the woman who was in the Explorer before the chase began.
