ANDERSON, Ind. —
A man who pleaded guilty to robbing and killing a teenager over marijuana was sentenced Monday.
Landon G. Smith, 21, of Anderson, received 12 years for charges of reckless homicide, robbery, resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license for an incident on Dec. 14, 2011, when Smith shot and killed 19-year-old Alonzo L. Page of Noblesville in the middle of the day in front of witnesses.
Judge Dennis Carroll of Madison Circuit Court 6 handed down the sentence to Smith, who pleaded guilty to the charges on Feb. 15.
According to police reports of the incident, Smith admitted to police that he had shot Page because of a disagreement over about $120 worth of marijuana. Page had claimed Smith stole the drugs from him in a phone argument between the two earlier in the day. Witnesses told police Smith called Page “sweet,” or weak, during the call. The two eventually agreed to meet in the area of Third and Henry streets with the idea that Smith would either return the drugs or pay Page.
Once there, Smith and a friend came out of the home and Smith displayed a chrome 25-caliber handgun sticking out of his right pocket.
A friend of Page walked up to Smith asking for the drugs or money, and Page pulled a small black semi-automatic .25-caliber handgun and pointed it at Smith and demanded the drugs. Page’s friend told police he talked Page into putting the safety on his gun and lowering it. The friend then asked if someone could go inside the house and get the drugs.
Soon after, Smith pushed Page’s friend aside, pulled out his gun and fired four shots at Page.
Page suffered gunshot wounds to the head and spent the next nine days in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries at IU Health’s Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The charges against Smith were amended several times, said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings. After mulling a charge of murder for some time, the prosecutor’s office eventually settled on reckless homicide because both sides in the incident had firearms.
