Police: Driver in fatal crash was going more than 110 mph

SUV’s ‘black box’ provided data

DALEVILLE, Ind — The black box taken from a sport utility vehicle involved in an accident that killed three people Sunday revealed the vehicle was traveling in excess of 110 mph at the time of impact.

Lisa H. Case, 46, of Anderson, was driving on South Delaware County Road 600 West off Indiana 67 in Daleville, when she drove over a hill and went off the east side of the road, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday.

Case apparently overcorrected and the SUV again left the roadway on the west side, traveled over a grassy hill, went airborne and then struck a large retaining wall.

The car landed upright, but was contorted and barely recognizable.

Two of the six people in the car were ejected, while others remained trapped.

Monday, officers served a search warrant for the SUV’s data recorder — also known as a “black box.” Tuesday, that revealed Case had floored the accelerator pedal and was moving faster than 110 miles per hour when the first airbags were deployed — at least 65 mph over the posted speed limit of 45.

Lt. Arlan Johnson said he’d learned the victims were headed to a bank on the corner of Indiana 67 and Walnut in Daleville. He had “an idea” of why they were traveling so fast, but couldn’t say until he’d interviewed the surviving victims.

Case, along with Andrew Lackey, 12, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Delaware County Coroner’s Office. Kent Kalley, 46, of Yorktown, was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, where he later died.

Three teenagers were injured: Savanna Kalley, 13, was taken to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she was in critical condition Tuesday, according to public relations official Lori Ewoldt, with IU Health. Trace Joiner and Jessica DeLong, both 13, were taken to IU’s Riley Hospital for Children, where they were reported to be in good condition.

The four youths attended Yorktown Community Schools, which posted the following message to its website Monday: “Our hearts and thoughts are with the Lackey family, along with the families of the other students and family members involved. Yorktown Community Schools has put into place the necessary measures to ensure students and staff have support resources available in this time of need.”

Johnson said none of the victims seemed to be related, except Kent Kalley and his daughter, Savanna.
