ANDERSON, Ind. —
Investigators are unsure of the condition of a man ejected from a van in a one-vehicle collision Saturday night, but he’s believed to be seriously injured.
Witnesses called 911 at about 8 p.m. after seeing a Chevrolet Venture minivan against a tree near Bethany Road not far from Lake Drive. The front end of the van was smashed into the tree and airbags had deployed.
Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said investigators believe the van, which was apparently traveling east, ran off the road, rammed into the tree and the driver, a man, was ejected and his body smashed into the tree. The reason the vehicle left the road is unclear.
An ambulance transported the man to Community Hospital in Anderson. His condition was unknown late Saturday evening, but he was seriously injured, and police were trying to get in touch with the man’s family, Richardson said.
“We believe he lives nearby,” Richardson said.
The roads near the accident had significant snow accumulation, and vehicle control was difficult to maintain.
Splinters of wood lined the road near the accident, likely from a nearby wooden power pole that was split down the middle. A large splinter rested on the road in front of the van. The power line connected to the pole was also damaged. It’s unclear whether the van hit the pole before running into the tree.
