ANDERSON — A 2-year-old boy in the passenger seat of a truck that drove into a brick duplex Saturday was OK after the accident, according to his mom.
“He’s a little shaken up,” said Kayla Williams, 18. “But he’s all right.”
Williams’ fiancé, David Seymbert, 21, was suspected by Anderson Police officers of driving the pickup Saturday.
Williams said on the scene that Seymbert left their home down the street from the accident site in the 1800 block of Park Road as they were unloading groceries.
She said she ran after him, “and this is what I found.”
Seymbert was transported to Saint John’s Medical Center for an investigation into whether he was under the influence of drugs, according Anderson Sgt. Shawn Richwine.
Williams said Seymbert was taking the anti-anxiety medication Xanax prescribed by a doctor, but she would not speculate on whether that was the cause of the accident.
She said the accident was the first Seymbert had ever had.
“I don’t understand how he would go through a house like that,” she said, consoling her son.
The tan Chevrolet pickup truck appeared to have gone straight through the front lawn into the left side of the brown brick duplex, smashing a mailbox and shrubs.
The accident broke a wall-sized front window, knocked about a two-foot section of bricks loose and exposed sheetrock.
The renter of the duplex did not want to be named but said firefighters told her she would not be able to return to the home.
Nerissa Jackson, the renter on the right side of the duplex, said she was one of the first people to see the accident.
“I came home and I’m thinking, ‘O, my God, my house,” she said.
Although her side of the building was not damaged, Jackson said she was told she also may be out of a home.
Richwine said charges against Seymbert were pending.
