MONROE TOWNSHIP — A 65-year-old Summitville man was killed early Wednesday morning after a single-vehicle accident, according to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight along County Road 100 East, just south of County Road 1400 North.
Madison County Coroner Ned Dunnichay has identified the deceased as Michael D. Shaffer, 65, of Summitville. He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. at the scene.
“Cause of death is multiple blunt-force injury to the head and chest, sustained in a motor vehicle accident,” Dunnichay said. “Road conditions were a factor this morning.”
Dunnichay said toxicology tests will be performed.
Shaffer was traveling northbound on County Road 100 East, between County Road 1300 North and County Road 1400 North, in a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled, ejecting the driver. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels in a corn field with the driver trapped underneath.
The Alexandria Fire Department and Madison County Emergency Management assisted.
