ALEXANDRIA — An off-duty state trooper stationed out of the Redkey Indiana State Police Post arrested Jaise A. Kirkland, 18, Marion, on numerous charges after a traffic stop at Indiana 9 at County Road 1450 north.
According to an Indiana State Police news release, Kirkland, in a 2004 Chevrolet, was coming up behind a marked Indiana State Police car, driven by Trooper David Fidler II, at a high rate of speed Thursday afternoon. The driver passed the police car in a no-passing zone.
Fidler stopped Kirkland in Madison County. Kirkland could not produce a license or registration so Fidler asked him to exit the vehicle and stand behind it while Fidler returned to his patrol car to call for on-duty Indiana State Police units to assist.
While Fidler was calling for assistance, Kirkland ran back to his own car and jumped in the driver’s seat. As he attempted to drive off Fidler reached in the car and grabbed his arm and put the vehicle back in park while pulling the Kirkland out of the car and handcuffing him.
Trooper Ron Huff, Pendleton State Police Post, arrived to assist and put Kirkland into his ISP car. Huff and other troopers then observed Kirkland hitting his head on Trooper Huff’s computer trying to damage it so they brought him out of the car.
Kirkland was able to flee into a field and nearby woods still handcuffed. Senior Trooper David Preston’s K-9 “Colt” chased down Kirkland and Troopers Jeff Franklin and Huff brought him back to the scene. Kirkland was taken to the Madison County Jail.
