ANDERSON — Three people were injured, one seriously, following crashes in Madison County on Monday and Tuesday.
Sheriff Ron Richardson said 60-year-old Craig M. Barnhart, Anderson, was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after the sport-utility vehicle he was driving crashed into a wooden fence on Monday. Richardson said debris from the fence went through the windshield and struck him in the head.
The sheriff said Barnhart was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango westbound along Indiana 38, near 25 East, shortly after 6 p.m. when the SUV went off the road’s north side and struck the fence head-on. Witnesses told investigators it appeared Barnhart’s vehicle hydroplaned on the wet roadway, causing him to lose control, Richardson said.
Barnhart was taken to Saint John’s Medical Center before being transferred to Methodist. Richardson said he was conscious at the scene, and suffered blunt-force trauma to the head. Barnhart’s condition wasn’t available late Tuesday.
A passenger in the SUV, Daniel J. Lewis, 53, Fishers, suffered a cut to his arm. He was also taken to Saint John’s, but his injury wasn’t believed to be life-threatening, Richardson said. His condition was also not available late Tuesday.
Markleville police, Rural/Metro ambulance service and Adams Township emergency responders assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
In the second crash, an Anderson woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries when her car was struck by an SUV Tuesday morning.
Richardson said Suzanne Shively, 55, Anderson, was driving a 1994 Acura Integra westbound on Indiana 128 shortly before 9:30 a.m. when her vehicle was struck by a SUV being driven south on Indiana 9.
The sheriff said Matheow Macowen, 28, Avon, was driving a 2008 Jeep Rubicon when he struck the passenger side of Shively’s car. Witnesses told investigators Macowen was talking on a cell phone and drove through a red light before hitting Shively’s vehicle.
Shively complained of neck and back pain and was taken to Community Hospital. Macowen declined medical attention at the scene.
Both were wearing seat belts and no citations were issued, Richardson said.
