PENDLETON — Pendleton Correctional Facility officials are investigating the stabbing of an inmate late last week.
Davonne L. Hargrave, 23, was at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis late Tuesday, but his condition was not available. Hospital officials said he was not listed as a patient, which could mean he did not authorize them to release information or that his stay is connected to a police matter.
However, Hargrave’s mother, Lisa Cordova, of Blue Island, Ill., confirmed that he is a patient at Wishard. She said her son was stabbed in the lower chest or upper abdomen on Thursday, but does not know any of the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Cordova said she didn’t know Hargrave’s condition, and was frustrated with the lack of information.
“They will not tell me,” she said Tuesday. “All they will tell me is that he is stable.”
Neil Potter, prison spokesman, confirmed the stabbing, but was unable to release any further information because the investigation is ongoing.
“Our internal affairs people are needing a few more days to investigate this, apparently, before we’re going to be prepared to be able to release any information on it,” Potter said Tuesday.
Hargrave was sentenced to 20 years in prison in March 2007. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in Lake County. His projected release date is March 2018, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.
