ALEXANDRIA — Fire destroyed a vacant home in northern Alexandria on Friday evening.
Alexandria Fire Lt. Brian Cuneo said firefighters were called to the single-story home at 107 Grant Street on the town’s north side at about 6:19 p.m.
The residence, with a two-car garage attached by a small hallway, was completely engulfed when firefighters arrived. Firefighters could see smoke billowing in the distance when they left the Alexandria Fire Department about a mile away, Cuneo said.
“We knew it was going to be a big one when we left the station,” he said. “When we pulled up, flames were showing through the roof.”
The home was unoccupied, but did have working electricity, according to Cuneo. The cause of the blaze wasn’t immediately known. Where the fire began inside the residence also wasn’t known Friday evening.
“We’ll be investigating,” Cuneo said. “It will be hard to tell with the fire damage.”
While the home is being considered a complete loss, the residence’s rear was the most heavily damaged, and the fire lieutenant said he suspects that is where the blaze began.
It wasn’t known late Friday who owns the home. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about an hour, but expected to remain at the scene until 10 p.m.
No firefighters were injured battling the blaze. Alexandria firefighters were assisted at the scene by Summitville and Pike Creek Township firefighters, and officials with Madison County Emergency Management. Richland Township firefighters manned the Alexandria fire station while the other firefighters extinguished the blaze.
