CHESTERFIELD — Town officials have hired two part-time workers to fill vacancies left when town employees were allegedly discovered stealing from town coffers during a state audit.
Maintenance workers James Walters and Chris Walters were fired along with Town Marshall Jamie Kimm and part-time police officer Joseph Brown after the five men were implicated in the theft of more than $259,000 from the town of Chesterfield. Earlier this year, Clerk-treasurer Chris Parrish resigned.
On Monday, town council members voted to hire Tanner Owens and Michael Noble as part-time maintenance workers to fill the spots left by full-time workers James and Chris Walters.
Both Walters brothers are currently suing the town for wrongful termination.
On Tuesday, James Walters said he could not comment on the litigation or the new hires at the town.
Clerk-treasurer Candy Bennett said Owens and Noble will be paid just over $10 an hour.
Town board member Karen Wilson said the town decided to fill the vacant maintenance positions when falling leaves became an issue for the town.
She said no further discussion has occurred regarding the three other positions left vacant in the wake of the theft.
