ANDERSON, Ind. —
Having a newly purchased ambulance, Anderson Fire Chief Phil Rogers says his department will be able to cover all four corners of the city.
The ambulance, named Medic 4, joins a fleet of three housed in various parts of the city; Medic 1 covers the north side at AFD headquarters at the corner of Fifth and Jackson streets; Medic 2 covers the south side from Station 8 at 53rd Street across the street from Ivy Tech; and Medic 3 covers the west side from Station 2 near the intersection of 22nd and Fulton streets.
Medic 4 began going out on runs last Friday, and is being housed at Fire Headquarters; however, Rogers said there are unofficial plans to move the new ambulance to Station 7 on the city’s east side at Eighth Street and Scatterfield Road.
“We’ll have all four sides covered,” Rogers said.
The ambulance was purchased through the department’s Ambulance User Fees Fund.
Rogers said there has been a need for another ambulance for some time. According to an ambulance statistics report, the department completed 7,820 runs in 2011. Rogers said Medic 4 will cut down on the need for private ambulance services, whose fees tend to be higher. For basic life support, the Fire Department charges patients $357. For advanced life support, it charges between $394 and $571.
“It will enhance our ability to get to the patient a little quicker, and give us some additional revenue,” Rogers said.
According to Rogers, each ambulance will be manned by a paramedic trained to administer ALS care. Previously the department had to send a paramedic out on a fire truck if all the other ambulances were out on runs.
Medic 4 has one feature the other ambulances don’t have, a replaceable box.
“We look for ambulances that we can use over and over, and save taxpayers some money,” Rogers said.
Even with the addition of another ambulance, Rogers said area ambulance services will have their hands full.
“There’s enough to go around, believe me,” Rogers said.
