Police: Adults in fatal wreck behaved irresponsibly

DALEVILLE, Ind. — Investigators learned from survivors of Sunday’s deadly wreck the accident was the result of “speed games” by the two adults in the car.

Survivors Trace Joiner and Jessica DeLong, both 13, told Lt. Arlan Johnson of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department they were fearful as front seat passenger Kent Kalley, 46, of Yorktown, and driver Lisa H. Case, 46, of Anderson appeared to try to “have fun” with the four children in the Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicle.

“They said that Kent told Lisa to go faster like five or six times,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the youths in the backseats pleaded with the adults to slow down. Joiner told Johnson he asked Case and Kalley to let him out of the vehicle or slow down, to which Kalley replied, “No, this will be fun.”

According to a press release from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, the six people in the vehicle were headed to a bank in Daleville on South Delaware County Road 600 West off Indiana 67. Case apparently drove over a hill and left the road on the east side of the road. She overcorrected and the SUV left the road again on the west side, traveled over a grassy hill, went airborne and struck a large retaining wall.

The car landed upright and two of the six people were ejected, while others remained trapped. The vehicle itself was left twisted and disintegrated.

The vehicle’s data recorder revealed that Case was driving faster than 110 mph, at least 65 mph over the posted speed limit, when the first airbags deployed, Johnson said.

Case, along with Andrew Lackey, 12, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kalley was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, where he later died.

His daughter, Savanna Kalley, 13, was taken to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday, according to public relations official Lori Ewoldt, with IU Health. Joiner and DeLong were taken to IU’s Riley Hospital for Children to be treated for minor injuries.
