ANDERSON — A mother was arrested on suspicion of child neglect on July 3 after leaving her 16-month-old daughter alone in a bathtub that contained water.
Jessica Schmink, 28, Anderson, was found unresponsive on her bed after taking several different types of prescription pills on the night of April 22 while the child sat in the bath.
According to a police affidavit, the child was in a bathroom that is not connected to the bedroom where Schmink was lying. It is not clear how much water was in the bathtub.
Schmink and the child were found by the child’s father, who took possession of the child, while Schmink was taken to Saint John’s Medical Center.
There she reportedly admitted to an emergency room doctor that she took four Xanax, nine sleeping pills and four pain pills.
A warrant was issued for her arrest on July 1 for Class D felony child neglect. The charge is punishable by six months to three years behind bars if she is convicted.
She was arrested on July 3 on a bond of $5,000 and bonded out later the same day.
Schmink had custody of the now 18-month-old child at the time of the incident.
Child protective services have been notified and are investigating, but it is not immediately known who has custody of the child.
It is not yet clear when Schmink will make an initial court appearance.
