ANDERSON, Ind. —
Police have arrested a suspect in Sunday’s fatal stabbing of an Anderson man.
Adam E. Layne, 26, of Anderson turned himself in for questioning just before 10 a.m. Monday, according to Anderson Police Department Lt. Paul Boulware.
Layne was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder while his girlfriend, Sarah D. Smith, 25, was arrested on a preliminary charge of assisting a criminal, Boulware said.
Police say Layne stabbed Willie Rumph, 23, during an altercation at Layne’s home in the 1600 block of Lincoln Street.
Anderson police Sgt. Bill Casey said Rumph suffered multiple stab wounds to his sides and drove himself the few blocks to Saint John’s Medical Center, where an off-duty police officer working security found him outside the emergency room covered in blood around 4:50 p.m.
He said Rumph died in surgery Sunday night at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after being transported via ambulance from Saint John’s.
According to Casey, Rumph had given police enough information for them to search the 1600 block of Lincoln Street, where police found blood along the sidewalk leading up onto the front porch of Layne’s house.
Police cleared the home and obtained a search warrant, but didn’t find Layne.
Boulware said police are still searching for a key witness and that the prosecutor’s office will determine final charges.
