ANDERSON, Ind. — After taking some top honors at three recent competitions, both the Highland Singers and Highland Starliters are headed this weekend to Mundelin (Ill.) Show Choir Invitational.

They are among 26 show and concert choirs participating.

The Highland Singers are a mixed choir of males and females; the Highland Starliters are female singers.

On Feb. 27, both the Singers and the Starliters show choirs won Grand Champion at Bellmont High School in Decatur, Ind.

On March 6, at Bishop Luers High School in Fort Wayne, the Starliters won Grand Champion. The Singers won first place in their division and runner-up overall.

And most recently, on March 13, the Singer won Grand Champion at East Noble High School in Kendallville. The Starliters were runners-up in the women’s division.

Several students have won individual awards: Layke Jones, of Highland Singers for best male solo in a show; Alyssa Walters, of Highland Singers for best female solo in a show, two weeks in a row. Those named as outstanding overall performers in a show are Hannah Samples and Morgan Pay, both of the Highland Starliters, and LaKeisha Johnson and Justin Blackwell of the Highland Singers.

Pandemonium, which is the show choir band, picked up a best band caption award at East Noble. The choirs, as a whole, have picked up several caption awards for best vocals and best choreography.

The choirs are led by Dustin Ramirez and his wife, Jamie. Dustin Ramirez was a Highland Singer in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
