INDIANAPOLIS — If the event had been the Olympics, the strains of “Scotland the Brave” would have been heard repeatedly in the corridors of North Central High School on Feb. 27.
Instead, 21 members of the Highland High School band department did without their school song as they picked up gold medals Saturday at the Indiana State School Music Association’s Solo & Ensemble state competition.
Soloists receiving gold ratings were Sara Graham, flute; Elizabeth Miller, oboe; Brittany Cripe, clarinet; Allen Doty and Drew Montgomery, alto saxophone; Tim Fights, trumpet, Shannon Smith, French horn; Layke Jones and Tyler Bentley, trombone and Brant Coburn, xylophone.
Five ensembles received gold ratings:
Flute trio: Sara Graham, Kaedra Hall and Megan Hunter.
Flute trio: Samantha Roy, Lindsey Beaty and Ashley Knight.
Saxophone quartet: Drew Montgomery, Allen Doty, Jonathan Daughtery and Lukas Stafford.
Trombone quartet: Layke Jones, Tyler Bentley, Wes Gustin and Robyn Dyer.
Brass quintet: Joey Jessup, Tim Fights, Shannon Smith, Layke Jones and Cogan Blackmon.
Eighteen band members also received silver ratings. They included soloists Lukas Stafford (alto sax) and J.L. Brown (trumpet), the saxophone choir of Drew Montgomery, Allen Doty, Jonathan Daughtery, Lukas Stafford, Brittany Woods, Jerome Sloss, Chris Renfro, Mercedes Chambers and Nick Anderson, and the clarinet choir of Kyle Blackwell, Brittany Cripe, Elizabeth Duquaine, Meagan Wykoff, Elizabeth Kovacs, Dylan Schuh, Kody Robinson and Brittany Woods.

ANDERSON — The Highland High School Music Department has released its updated schedule.
Performances include:
-- Tuesday, March 23: Spring jazz concert for Blues Band, Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble. 7 p.m. Highland High School Auditorium.
-- Saturday, April 24: Highland High School’s 10th Annual “Music of the Big Bands A Dinner Dance,” featuring the Blues Band, Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble. Dinner is at 6:30. p.m. Music and dancing is from 8 to 10 p.m. Ticket information: Highland Band office, 641-2068.
-- Friday, May 7 through Sunday, May 9: “Plaid & White Revue,” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Highland High School’s Fuller Gymnasium.
-- Saturday, May 29: Highland High School’s Marching Highlanders in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade.
