Brooks reaches Ph.D candidacy at IU

Scarlett T. Brooks, 32, daughter of Bettye J. Brooks and the late Edward L. Brooks, advanced to Ph.D. candidacy in the Department of English at Indiana University Bloomington on June 5.

Her major course of study was 20th-century American literature with a concentration on literature of people of African descent. Her minor was cultural studies with a focus on institutional history.

She is a 1995 graduate of Anderson High School; a 1999 graduate of Butler University, and a 2003 graduate of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt.

She has also taught at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis; The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn.; Kent Denver School in Colorado; Ivy Tech Bloomington; and Indiana University.

She currently resides in Bloomington.

Wepler graduates with honors

Katherine L. Wepler, daughter of William and Deborah Wepler, Anderson, recently graduated with distinction from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio Northern University. She received the bachelor of fine arts degree in communication arts.

On campus, Wepler was active in Theta Alpha Phi theater honorary, the Open Doors organization and the ONU Environmentalists club.

Wepler is a graduate of Highland High School.

Pendleton students graduate from Marian College

Two Pendleton residents earned a degree during the 2008-09 academic year.

Zachary R. Berline earned a bachelor’s degree in management, and Brenda Lee Huckeby received a nursing degree.

The students represent the final graduating class of Marian College. On July 1 Marian College became Marian University.

Franks graduates from Hanover

Anderson resident Kathleen Franks was among 205 students who received the bachelor of arts degrees during Hanover College’s 176th annual commencement ceremony. The event was held Saturday, May 23, at The Point on the College’s campus.

Franks, an English major, is the daughter of Mark and Susan Franks of Anderson. She is a graduate of Highland High School.

Gernand named to dean’s list

Alyssa Kate Gernand has received recognition on the National Dean’s List for the spring semester of the 2009 academic year at Indiana Wesleyan University. To be named on this list, a student must obtain a 3.500 grade-point average on a 4.000 scale and carry at least 12 credit hours for the semester.

Eddy completes studies at Harding University

Kristopher Eddy of Anderson was among nearly 600 graduates who received diplomas in May 9 commencement exercises at Harding University in Searcy, Ark. Eddy, majoring in leadership and organizational management, received the master of business administration degree.

Noland is honored at Univ. of C. Missouri

Robin Noland of Anderson was named to the 2009 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. Her academic work earned her a place on the 3.5 to 3.99 list.

rea students honored at Rose Hulman

Three area students have been named to the dean’s list at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the spring quarter of the 2008-09 academic year.

They are Adam Hester, Clark Moser and Samuel Ostling.

Switzer named to BSU dean’s list

Victoria D. (Tori) Switzer of Pendleton was named to the dean’s list at Ball State University for the Spring 2009 semester. Tori is the daughter of Craig and Barbara Switzer. She just finished her freshman year and is studying nursing at Ball State.

Brueggen graduates from Spring Arbor University

Geoffrey Brueggen of Anderson has graduated from Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Mich., with a degree in chemistry. He is the son of Gene and Annie Brueggen.

County residents honored by Marian College

Three county residents have qualified for the Marian College dean’s list during the spring 2009 semester.

They are Jennifer Mae Parr of Pendleton, David James Sowar of Anderson and Hollee Shanley of Pendleton.

Four given AFT scholarships

The following four candidates of Anderson Community Schools were awarded scholarships by the Anderson Federation of Teachers.

AFT Legacy Scholarship - $1,500, to Alexis Mechem, daughter of Melanie and Larry Mechem.
