ANDERSON — Coming soon to the grounds of Anderson High School: A reminder of the school that was.
A momument in honor of Madison Heights High School will be placed on the current location of Anderson High School, after the Anderson Community Schools board Tuesday unanimously approved a request for such a tribute.
The monument will honor the Pirate legacy of thousands who graduated during Madison Heights’ 40 school years from 1956 to 1997.
“It’s an important monument, and it’s an important remembrance to embrace,” said Jim Rogers, who spoke on behalf of more than 800 supporters representing Anderson, Highland and Madison Heights high schools.
“Let’s remember the past, even as we move forward,” Rogers said.
Rogers told the board that the monument would be fully funded by donations, and that more than $2,000 has been raised through a fund established by the Madison County Community Foundation.
Several speakers had signed up to petition the board for the monument, but it wasn’t necessary. The board quickly approved the monument request after Rogers’ presentation.
“You have your monument,” board President P.T. Morgan said to applause from many in the crowd of 200.
