Poverty examined

According to U.S. Census data from 2007, the last available year, 16,986 Hoosiers were considered to be in poverty. This represented about 13.6 percent of the state population in that year.

Troubled minds

Approximately 16 percent of the single adult homeless population suffers from some form of severe and persistent mental illness, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless.

Homeless veterans

Research indicates that 40 percent of homeless men have served in the armed forces, as compared to 34 percent of the general adult population, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless.
