INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A pair of statues standing 25 feet tall based on the 1930 "American Gothic" painting will greet visitors when the Indiana State Fair opens next week.
Crews erected the "God Bless America" sculpture by J. Seward Johnson on Monday at the state fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The sculpture depicts a farming couple that have become icons of rural America, and the California-based Sculpture Foundation has displayed it in several cities.
State fair spokesman Andy Klotz says the statues will remind fairgoers about the importance of agriculture in Indiana.
The state fair opens its 17-day run on Aug. 6. The fair drew nearly 974,000 visitors last summer.
