Madison County Hoosier Lotto winner claims prize of $1.1 million

Platinum LLC created to keep name confidential

ANDERSON, Ind. —  Someone in Madison County is $1.1 million richer.

That person hit the Hoosier Lotto jackpot Aug. 29, but didn’t claim the prize until Dec. 21.

The check was issued to Platinum LLC, which “was created to keep the winner’s name confidential,” said lawyer James O. Anderson, who claimed the check on its behalf.

Anderson picked up the check at the Hoosier Lottery headquarters in Indianapolis.

On Thursday, Anderson said that First Merchants Trust Co. is the sole member of Platinum LLC, and will handle the money for the winner. He said it would likely be invested.

Hoosier Lotto spokesman Al Larsen said it was not uncommon for a limited liability company to be formed to protect a winner’s confidentiality.

In 2011, The Chicago Tribune reported that about 20 percent of the $1 million-plus prize winners in Illinois form a legal entity to claim their money. The extra step can allow winners to keep their sudden riches from being under the spotlight or create tax benefits.

On Dec. 19, a $1 million Powerball prize won in Noblesville was claimed at Hoosier Lottery headquarters. The prize was claimed by SPII Investments, LLC.

Similarly, a November Hoosier Lotto jackpot winner of $3.5 million was claimed by M Kids, LLC of Gary, Ind. A representative for the LLC, attorney Geff Rainbolt, accepted the winnings and indicated that the winner was a Hoosier and a regular Hoosier Lottery player who wished “to maintain their current lifestyle.”

According to records with the Indiana Secretary of State, Platinum LLC was formed by Anderson on Dec. 12 with an address listed as one for First Merchants Trust Co. on Meridian Street in Indianapolis.

Though the name of the individual winner may be protected, it is known that the winner goes to the Meijer store in Anderson.

The winning ticket was purchased in August at the Meijer store at 6610 Scatterfield Road in Anderson.

This Hoosier Lotto jackpot is one of seven for 2012. The other six winning tickets were bought in Indianapolis, Gary, Frankfort, Columbus, Highland and Shelbyville.
